在某些方面，日本和巴菲特可谓天作之合。巴菲特以对商业基本面的准确关注而闻名。即使在最近美国股票被抛售之后，东京股市仍然便宜得多。其市盈率(基于明年的预期收益)约为13，而美国为18。伯克希尔哈撒韦投资的贸易公司在日本被称为sogo shosha，它们通常被认为是古板而可靠的。这些公司的市盈率都在10倍以下，而且派息丰厚。
伯克希尔哈撒韦在日本的交易也在其他方面揭示了问题。这说明了为什么对其他美国投资者来说，这个国家可能会成为一个更诱人的目的地。4月14日，这家投资公司发行了约12亿美元的日元计价债券，在2019年至2022年期间发行了78亿美元。日本现在不仅是伯克希尔哈撒韦公司的第二大投资地点，日元也是其第二大融资货币。甚至在最近的债券发行之前，伯克希尔哈撒韦公司近五分之一的债务是以日元计价的。
这家公司没有借钱，因为它缺钱。相反，这种交易揭示了货币对冲的优势。借入和买入日元可以保护巴菲特免受日元贬值的影响。由于美国和日本之间的利率差距，他可以利用年利率低于2%的长期贷款为自己的投资融资，同时把闲钱留在国内投资于政府债券，收益近5%。巴菲特过去曾质疑过外汇对冲的价值。如今，它的吸引力似乎不可抗拒。与借入美元相比，借入日元的成本非常低，因此，对于那些对日本股市稍有兴趣的投资者来说，借入日元是一件无需动脑的事。
当然，并非所有这样的投资者都能轻松发行日元计价债券。但那些无法做到这一点的国家可能会利用货币政策缺口，采取更直接的货币对冲措施。远期和期货市场的价格是由两个经济体之间的利率差异决定的。在过去的18个月里，美国而不是日本利率的飙升意味着日本投资者正在支付巨大的溢价来购买美国资产，以保护自己免受汇率波动的影响。当美国投资者在另一个方向做同样的事情时，他们会得到相当可观的溢价。
目前日圆兑美元汇率为134日圆，但明年3月到期的日圆期货让投资者有机会在127日圆兑美元的价位卖出。这样一来，在不到一年的时间里，回报率就锁定在了5%。唯一的成本是买方必须在整个期间持有日元。对于想要持有日本股票的投资者来说，对冲的回归本质上是一种奖励。这个机会看起来不太可能消失。即使日本央行放弃控制收益率曲线的政策，也没有分析师预计日本利率会大幅上升。
潜在的好处是巨大的。过去一年，MSCI美国指数的净回报率(包括资本利得和股息)为-5%。摩根士丹利资本国际日本指数(MSCI Japan index)没有对冲，但以美元计算，回报率为1%。摩根士丹利资本国际日本对冲指数(MSCI Japan hedging index)同期上涨了12%，该指数以日本股票的一个月滚动远期汇率为基础。
可能只是因为过去10年左右美国股市令人羡慕的回报，才没有更多的投资者利用日本的红利。但大人物们开始飞往太平洋的另一边。维权投资者埃利奥特管理公司(Elliott Management)因干预大日本印刷(Dai Nippon Printing)而获得回报。该公司的股价今年飙升了46%。与此同时，据报道，美国对冲基金Citadel在东京重新开设了一个办事处，该办事处在过去15年里一直远离东京。在一段时间内，日本市场悄然提供了稳定的回报，巴菲特和其他美国金融巨头的例子可能会引起更多的关注。
